Bestselling Author Inspires Sherrelwood Students

Sherrelwood Elementary Level 5 students recently enjoyed a visit from Jasmine Warga, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of “Other Words for Home” and “A Rover’s Story.” Warga, a former sixth-grade science teacher, shared how her background and her childhood in Cincinnati influenced her path to becoming an award-winning novelist.

During the visit, Warga discussed her transition from the classroom to writing books that have been translated into more than 25 languages. She spoke to students about the importance of storytelling and her goal to help all kids feel empowered through her writing. The session gave students a unique look into the career of a Newbery Honor recipient whose work continues to resonate with young readers worldwide.

Warga also introduced students to her newest middle-grade novel, “The Unlikely Tale of Chase and Finnegan.” Inspired by real-life animal ambassador programs, the story follows the powerful bond between an anxious cheetah cub and a rescue dog. She explained how the book explores themes of healing and friendship, reminding students that even the most unlikely connections can help us find our way.

The visit left the Level 5 classes inspired to find their own voices and explore the power of their unique narratives. Warga encouraged the students to be curious about the world around them, noting that her own best ideas often come from simply observing and interacting with others.
