COLORADO ROCKIES BRING ‘GOOD HEALTH’ TO ORCHARD PARK
With the help of Dinger the Dinosaur and Colorado Rockies players, Orchard Park Academy students are beginning the new year with a renewed focus on healthy living and ways to take care of their bodies and minds.

“Wellness is a critical part of everyday life for all of us and it’s important that we start these conversations early,” said Melisa Sandoval, Director of Wellness for Westminster Public Schools.

In a fun, interactive program students learned the importance of making good choices about food and exercise and how to avoid peer pressure about the use of drugs and alcohol. Students were also told about the importance of finding new interests and talking with loved ones about things that are on their minds.

Dinger delivered the message in person with the members of the team sending along videotaped messages.

Community liaison Alexis Cano worked with the Rockies to put the event together and says it surpassed all expectations.

“The kids were happy, engaged, and excited to play baseball with Dinger,” she said. “My favorite part was when one of our students received an autographed baseball from Charlie Blackmon.”

For everyone involved, it was a day to remember.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO SIMULATE MISSION TO SATURN
Thanks to a partnership with Lockheed Martin and the engineering firm Garver, Westminster High School's engineering students are engaging in an extraordinary multiyear project simulating an upcoming mission to Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. The "Dragonfly Navigation Project" will carry a car-sized, nuclear-powered dronelike vehicle to Titan to collect atmospheric data.

Westy Grad Jake Hoban (class of 1995) presented a check for 1400 dollars from Garver to support the simulation work being done by students in conjunction with Lockheed Martin which is engineering the real-life project. Chris Lannon (class of 1999) works for Lockheed and took the lead in bringing Westminster High School students on board. The two believe that bringing students on board to simulate a real-life mission will help create the next generation of engineers.

“We are excited to give opportunities to students, similar to what I had when I was coming through high school,” said Hoban. “If Garver can create a good pipeline for students to go into civil engineering or aerospace engineering where they go into college knowing that this is of interest to them it’s a great opportunity.”

The partnership will allow students to enhance their technical and problem-solving skills while engaging with industry professionals and presenting their findings to a panel of experts. The NASA project be launched in July of 2028 with the drone arriving in 2034.

This collaborative effort highlights the power of community and education in inspiring the next generation of engineers. Stay tuned for more updates as this unique partnership unfolds in 2025.

SANDRA PEÑA EMERSON
Head Custodian

John E. Flynn, A Marzano Academy

When Don Ciancio offered Sandra the Head Custodian position at John E. Flynn, A Marzano Academy, Sandra made him a promise, “I’m going to clean this school like I would my own home.”

After having worked in construction and food service, one of the perks of the job for Sandra is the interaction with the children. “I love the children, and they love me- they might bring me a candy or even a soda!” Like most kids, they may need an occasional reminder to pick up a piece of trash, but they know what needs to be done to keep the school clean. “I love that!” says Sandra, “We help each other and they motivate me. I would have loved to have lots of children, but I only have one.”

With her positive attitude and strong work ethic, Sandra is certainly making an impact at Flynn. “I know I don’t have a profession or a degree, but this is a dignified job that I do and I feel proud.”

Years in WPS: 6 years

Favorite Food: My favorite American food is a cheeseburger with french fries, and my favorite food from El Salvador is arroz y frijoles (rice and beans.)

Favorite quote or mantra: You always need to keep God in your heart and in your mind. Never close the door to anyone- if someone comes to your door asking for help, you open the door.

Favorite Athlete/Sports Team: I’m going to say Kansas City Chiefs. My husband loves Kansas City, and we are not even allowed to wear orange in the house! We all have Kansas uniforms.

What are your hobbies: Cleaning! I always see something to clean - my husband and daughter tease me about it. I also love gardening in the yard and taking care of my beautiful flowers.

What I am listening to right now: All kinds of music! My husband listens to country all the time. Before, I didn’t understand the words, but now I love it. I love Cumbia- in El Salvador we are “Cumbieros.” I like Reggaetón, and I love music from Mexico like “Los Tucanes.”

Superpower I wish I had: I would like to be able to help people. Right now with the fires in California- I want to make it snow, or rain. Why would I want to be able to fly or disappear? If you’re going to have a superpower it should be to help people, to help the world. Not just something for yourself.

If I could make the world a better place in one way: To make the world a better place, we need to plant more trees. The ozone layer is being destroyed, and it’s our fault. We have to take care of nature, even the smallest animals, even the ant.

What has Westminster Public Schools meant to you? For me, Westminster Public Schools has given me everything. When I started working here I wanted to be with my family in a house, but I couldn’t qualify for a mortgage for a home. Working for WPS has given us everything- our home, the food on our table. WPS is everything to me!

What do you like about working at Flynn? The teachers here are wonderful because we have great communication. It’s like teamwork– the Principal sets the example for the teachers and for the students. For example, last Tuesday when we had all that snow, I didn’t have time to set up the lunch room. I had to shovel snow all day- it just kept coming. It’s important to keep the walkways clear for everyone’s safety and I lost track of time. When I realized what time it was, the assistant principal and the teachers had already set up the lunchroom for the kids. I was so grateful to them for helping me and they were grateful for me shoveling the snow. It was a beautiful experience! I really, really, really like this school!

Who inspires me in WPS (staff, parent, or student): Everyone inspires me! I love the way Don Ciancio takes care of us custodians. He has opened the door for us. He pays attention to who works hard and who doesn’t, and he will open the doors for you if you work hard. Nick McCoy has helped me a lot as well with whatever I’ve needed. When I worked at Shaw Heights, I met Gabe Trujillo and he was very kind to me. I appreciate all of them! They’ve given me the opportunity to advance and grow. That’s what I like about the district- they try to help you in whatever you need. It’s beautiful. I feel proud to work for this district, because when they see a need, they provide options. I never come to work mad- I’m always happy to come to work here!

SHERRELWOOD ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES PARENTS SUPPORTING STUDENTS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Sherrelwood Elementary School recently hosted a Parent Recognition Event to honor parents whose efforts at home and behind the scenes contribute to their children’s success. Unlike other recognition events that may focus on parents who can volunteer during the school day, this event celebrates those who support their children in ways that often go unnoticed, and happen before or after the school bell rings.

The event highlighted parents who ensure their kids get to school on time, foster a love for reading, and maintain strong communication with teachers, to name a few. Sherrelwood Title 1 Teacher, Tonya Miller, who helped organize the initiative, explained the importance of recognizing these contributions. “We have some parents who say ‘Oh, you’re celebrating me because my child’s here on time?’ and I want them to know that those things are very important too,” Miller said. “I feel that one of the things that makes a great student is a parent who loves them and is there for them when they come home.”

Principal Cindy Davis also spoke to the parents at the event, explaining the inspiration for this unique type of recognition. “Mrs. Miller and I were teachers when we had kids, and we couldn’t come to the school in the middle of the day. So, we sat down together and decided we needed to recognize everything a parent does at home. What you do every day, day in, day out, [and] that makes a difference at school and we notice. We know what it looks like when you work from home, so we thank you.”

The luncheon served as a reminder that every parent’s contribution—no matter how big or small—plays a vital role in student success. By broadening the definition of involvement, Sherrelwood Elementary is fostering a more inclusive community where every family feels valued and appreciated.

UNIVERSITY OF DENVER MUSICIANS PLAY FOR HARRIS PARK STUDENTS
Just before the winter break, Harris Park students had a unique opportunity to hear from top level musicians as the wind quintet ShakduGAT played for them and answered questions about their instruments and passion for music.

Colleen McCracken (flute), Zachary Gnall (oboe), Lee Cyphers (horn), Stuart Young (bassoon), and John F. Griffin, Jr. (clarinet) are all current or recently graduated students from the University of Denver and friends with music teacher James Shemwell. He invited them to Harris Park to play a mix of holiday songs, art pieces and popular songs.

“The opportunity to give our kids a chance to see and hear instruments which they don't often get to experience, performed so brilliantly, was a great one,” said Shemwell. “I hope it served as a chance to bring some joy to staff and learners and to hopefully inspire WPS students to explore more of what the Creative Arts Pipeline could offer them in their future."

The group brought its unique take on chamber music to schools, senior centers and community spaces across the metro area during the holiday break. They also played for Food Bank of the Rockies volunteers and 9NEWS was there.

SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER: FLYNN STUDENTS DECORATE TREES FOR VETERANS
Every year, the spirit of giving shines brightly at John E. Flynn A Marzano Academy where level 6 students engage in a cherished tradition of decorating felt Christmas trees for veterans at the VA hospital in Aurora, Colorado. This heartwarming project, now celebrating its 13th year, is spearheaded by dedicated parent volunteer Cathy Hurrell, who ensures that the joy of the holiday season is shared with those who may be feeling alone this time of year.

A Personal Connection

Under the guidance of Flynn teacher Carrie Strand, students set to work creating unique and festive trees covered with candy canes, toys and festive ornaments. The project holds a special significance for Elaina Rivera, who shared a touching story of her grandparent who had served in the Marines and has since passed away. Both Strand and Hurrell also have family members who served in the military.

The Spirit of Giving

As the decorated trees were carefully packed and prepared for delivery to the VA hospital, the students reflect on the impact of their efforts. Matias Lopez described how good it felt to do something for someone else and says he hopes to participate in more projects like this in the future. The initiative not only brightens the holiday season for the veterans but also instills a sense of empathy and community service in the Flynn students.

As the holiday season unfolds, it is important to remember the profound difference that even the smallest acts of kindness can make. Hurrell, whose three children all attended Westminster Public Schools, estimates that through this initiative they have contributed over 13,000 trees over the years. Through their creativity and compassion, these young students are spreading holiday cheer and honoring the true spirit of the season.
