Navigating Change

While change can often be exciting, it may also create feelings of uncertainty for students and families. Here are some tips for talking about the upcoming transition.

Create Trust and Transparency

Tell your child that any feelings they are experiencing are normal and they are not alone and should not be ashamed. Share that in the long run, this is a tremendous opportunity for the students and their friends.

Explain the Facts

Remind younger students that their friends, teachers and staff will be moving with them to a new building. For older students at Shaw, this transition will be an opportunity to take on a leadership role.

Set an Example

Children pick up on the emotions of their loved ones. If you are uncertain or even unhappy with this transition, it’s important to be aware that the way you navigate this transition and respond to change can influence how your child responds as well.
Ease the Transition

Take full advantage of Open Houses and building tours as they become available. WPS will be providing regular updates on the planning and construction process and we encourage you to share this information with your children. Just as you would take kids to see the new house under construction, allow them to be part of this exciting process.
Plug into Resources

School counselors, staff and mental health experts have the training and expertise to help students deal with change and anxiety. Never hesitate to reach out for assistance.
