WPS School Choice

Westminster Public Schools (WPS) is an open-enrollment district and we encourage families, no matter where they live, to apply to any of our 18 competency based schools. Admission criteria and transportation options vary by school and are subject to space limitations. To learn more about WPS please view our District Guide .

Who should use the out-of-district application?

Students who live outside of WPS boundaries and would like to attend any of the Westminster Public Schools neighborhood schools in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade. This application is required every year, even if an out-of-district student plans to continue at the same school.

What about out-of-district preschool students?

Children who will not be 5 years old by October 1st will need to apply for preschool. Both In-District and Out-of-District families must apply for preschool using a process that works with the Colorado State Universal Preschool Program.

OUT OF DISTRICT PRESCHOOL APPLICATION

Enrollment Windows for the 25/26 Academic Year

Round 1 | December 11, 2024 through January 31, 2025. Notification for round 1 acceptance is no later than February 28, 2025.
Round 2 | February 1, 2025 through April 30, 2025. Notification for round 2 acceptance is no later than May 31, 2025.
Round 3 | June 1, 2025 through September 30, 2025. Notification for round 3 acceptance is no later than October 1, 2025.

Westminster Public Schools does not accept out of district students for the school year after October 1.

What documents do I need for the application?

If accepted, out-of-district families will need to provide the following information which will need to be uploaded during online registration:

Verification of child’s age. Acceptable documents include a copy of the child’s birth certificate, baptismal record, or hospital record.
Verification of current address. Acceptable documents include a copy of current lease, proof of home ownership, or a utility bill such as gas, electric, water or cable.
For high school students, also provide transcripts from previous school for grades 9-12.
Proof of vaccination. Colorado law requires all students attending Colorado schools and licensed childcare facilities to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless they have a medical or non-medical exemption on file (Colorado Board of Health rule 6 CCR 1009-2).

How are students applications approved or denied?

Approval of out-of-district enrollment is based on available space, programming, and staffing at the requested school. When the number of applicants exceeds the number of spaces available, students will be selected by a random selection lottery. Each enrollment window will have its own capacity limits by school. In addition to space and program availability at the selected school, enrollment may be denied based on attendance/truancy and/or behavior.

Do some WPS schools use a different application process?

Yes. The Out-of-district application is for all of the WPS neighborhood schools. The Innovation Schools have a separate application that all interested students must fill out, regardless or whether or not they live in the district. In addition, Hidden Lake Secondary School requires that families attend an enrollment application night before students can be considered for acceptance. Is there transportation for out of district students?

What if my out-of-district student has an IEP or 504?

Out-of-district applicants are initially accepted without regard to educational disability. However, if an accepted student has an IEP or Section 504 plan, the District will request a copy during the registration process, which occurs after acceptance but before enrollment. The District will use the IEP or Section 504 plan to determine whether the requested school can meet the requirements of the current IEP or 504 plan with existing staff and program elements. If not, an IEP or Section 504 team will be convened to determine whether the student can receive a free, appropriate, public education (“FAPE”) in the requested school notwithstanding the limitations at that school. If the IEP or Section 504 team determines the student cannot be provided FAPE in the requested school, then enrollment will be denied.
